Take the plunge at Go Active at Brathay's open water swimming sessions
ASPIRING merpeople can finally follow their dreams and take the splash.
Swim The Lakes has teamed up with the Brathay Trust to offer beginners the chance to test out a wild swimming experience.
For a one-off price of £15, those visiting Brathay’s Ambleside grounds to watch Sunday’s Windermere marathon can take some time out from spectating to spend an hour in the water.
Pete Kelly, Swim The Lakes adventure swim director, said: “If you have ever been tempted to dive into an inviting, shimmering lake - but just didn’t quite make the jump - this is your moment!”
The sessions are being hosted as part of Go Active at Brathay, a new initiative from the national children’s and young people’s charity, which aims to get more people involved in outdoor and fitness pursuits.
Mr Kelly said: “The initiative shares the same philosophy as our business – introducing new and exciting ways of enjoying the Lake District. We both live and work in an awesome environment and it’s just too good not to share.”
Mr Kelly said: “Swimming is an excellent way to get active because it suits all abilities and ages. Take it into the outdoors and it’s even better – more exciting in every way and so much more interesting than doing laps in a pool!
“The good thing about open water swimming is that it can be as hard or as easy as you want it to be. You can race around an island at top speed, or cruise around doing heads up breaststroke, admiring the wildlife and lake views.”
Swimming sessions will be run at 11am, 12.30pm, 2pm and 3.30pm and are suitable for those aged over 16.
Wetsuit hire is included but visitors should bring their own towels and swimsuits.
Bookings can be made on the day but those who want to make sure they can get the time they want should visit https://www.swimthelakes.co.uk/product/go-active-at-brathay-wild-swimming/ beforehand to book a place.
