Workington will host its second Festival of Running this summer.

The event will feature 1km, 5km and 10km races, along with a host of free activities for children including arts and crafts, fairground rides and face painting.

For the first time there will also be free taster sessions at the leisure centre, where the races start and end.

The Festival of Running was held for the first time last year and attracted hundreds of runners.

Last year’s 1km race, which is aimed at everyone from complete beginners, attracted many walkers in fancy dress. This year prizes will be available for the best costumes.

Organisers say the 5km and 10km races, taking place on mainly traffic-free routes designed by Cumberland Athletics Club, are suitable for both experienced club runners and first timers.

The 10km route will be the club’s New Moorclose annual race.

Entries are open now for the event, with prices of £3 for the 1km, £7 for the 5km and £7 for the 10km.

Entries can also be taken on the day.

The event is organised by cnevents and supported by Allerdale council, Sport England, GLL, Cumberland Athletics and Go Active.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Allerdale council executive member responsible for sports development, said: “I am delighted that the Festival of Running is returning once again, and I am very much looking forward to seeing all the action take place at the new leisure centre in Workington.

“One of the Council’s priorities is to create healthier communities, so the aim of this event is to encourage local people to participate in sport, whether they are a beginner or a more experienced sportsperson. Everyone is welcome to come along and get involved.”
